Sports and YNG

Before I begin; its the 8th day we have not heard from Vic Rubenstein; we sent him another email yesterday and still no response. Let’s hope he is bringing the airline this week and not ignoring us!

Back to the Topic of the Day. The quest to bring airlines to Youngstown is similar to bringing in Sports Teams to Youngstown. So let’s compare the markets, okay?

Baseball: Back in 1998 we heard the criticism of folks similar to those of the horrifific Dems17 board criticizing Cafaro and other local leaders for bringing in the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Its in its 6th year now and still average near 4500 per game. Criticism at the time: Cleveland Indians to North-Akron Aeros (NEW BallPark) to West-Pittsburgh Pirates to South.

Hockey: If you thought the criticism to bring Baseball to the area was bad, boy criticism to bring hockey was even worse. In an area in which football dominates, no one thought or still thinks hockey can survive. Sure the initial predictions fell short but the Steelhounds attendance has been rising the past few weeks and its on board for its 3rd straight sell out Feb 1. The area has come out in force and hockey will survive. Dems17 let the pictures tell the truth. Criticism at the time and now: Cleveland a city of 450K Can’t support a Hockey Team and they are relocating to Worcester, MA (ORH) and the Pittsburgh Penguins are about to leave due to $$$ reasoning.

Football: I wouldn’t call this criticism just some simple facts. This area is without a doubt one of the major football proud towns in the USA, and it shows. Once again YSU lead the attendance in the Gateway Football Conf. averaging about 15,000 per game. Let’s go take a trip down the interstate to our good friends in Kent State, averaging 3,000 per game and Akron, average 8,000 per game; AND THEY ARE I-A MAC SCHOOLS!

I think you see where I am going here. People argue that this area is serviced by 3 well establish airports; I agree wholeheartedly; but they also think this airport can’t compete with them. These are the same people criticizing our sports teams for trying to compete with these 3 cities, and last time I checked they are competing quite well as teams in other cities are on the verge of shutting doors.

I can’t argue it enough; the 700,000 people in the Youngstown-Warren Metro Area can and will support any airline at YNG as they support the local sports teams in the valley.
