YNG Applies for $800,000 SCASD Grant.

The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport made more progress by applying for an $800,000 Small Communities and Air Services Grant from the DOT. The plan is a total of 27 pages. (The other 22 are misc. pages for a Florida Airport) To read the application: CLICK THIS LINK.

Let me start off by saying I really had expected YNG to put in a weak application for $250,000 for marketing of Allegiant Air; but they finally did their due diligence and applied for $800,000 for daily flights on 50-90 seat regional jets. After studying the plan, there was survey taken of area businesses, in which 40% were returned responded with the front running choice for business flights to Chicago O’Hare. The application does not list a specific airline that they are going after, or any airline ’support’ letters for KYNG; that MAY end up hurting us. The main reason there is no airline support letters is because they are unsure what destination they want to go after just yet.

The plan is very well done and provides a number of references and a strong survey which will only help out our cause. I think when the DOT evaluates their observations, they will see the award from 2004?/2005? for $250,000 was well used with Allegiant; and that an $800K grant will really get this airport back on track. The local community will also add to the DOT monies, if awarded, and then total cost of the project will be about $1,850,000; by far the largest sum of money the airport has even given the opportunity to use to bring in airlines.

The application also has a few forecasts to a total number of passengers an airline may expect if the route was flown. It states a total avg. of 55,000 enplanements/110,000 total passengers per year to Chicago O’Hare if the route was offered. In the first 3 years of service, the loads would increase from 68%-75%; with the total amount of dollars given to the airline to make a profit from $638k to $153k to $0 after the 3rd year.

My only complain is I think they kind of stole one of the names on this blog, which is Fly YNG and the connection with coalition in it. Throughout the application, it states FLY YNG and the coalition; when I do believe WE were the first to throw that name out there 2 summers ago. But I digress; this is good for the airport to go after, I do believe 3-5 flights a day to O’Hare would be successful with the right advertising/marketing in place. I am not sure what we can do to show our support to the USDOT for our application; other than create a positive vibe on here and throughout the local papers/media.

WE HAVE BEEN AWARDED THE SCASD GRANTS BEFORE, AND THIS BY FAR WOULD BE THE MOST INFLUENTIAL GRANT AWARDED YET!

I just read the grant proposal and am very impressed with the quality, detailed facts, and the very comprehensive survey conducted. Congratulations to the YNG board and WRPA for such an outstanding effort to attract regularly secheduled air service to YNG. They clearly did their homework, especially by incorporating business input and expanding the population base beyond the three county area.

THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE. NOW LET’S HOPE THEY ARE AWARDED THE GRANT AND SOON SEE NEW LIFE AT YNG……

Nice job to the YNG airport management on the SCASD grant submision. Very thorough and informative. However, it was dissapointing to read that time frame for re-launching service at YNG would not be until late spring or summer of 2008. I really thought something would happen this year. I guess we finally have the answer to the question of the airline that was “soon and close” to making an anouncement of starting service at YNG……..there never was one!

    Randy-

If you click on the link at the top of the page, it tells you that the money would be used as a “revenue guarantee program” for the airline willing to bring service to YNG.

Late last night I sent an email to WKBN-WYTV-WFMJ-VINDY-BUS. JOUR.-TRIB regarding the posting of the 2007 SCASD Grant.
4 out of the 6 have put up articles regarding the news. Check in tomorrows Vindicator for an in-depth report on it.
Folks; this blog is making an influence on this community, your continued support only makes your opinions that much closer to becoming a REALITY!

I wanted to post this as well: Allegiant Air has enjoyed over 93% average load factor for its flights in the 1′ Quarter of 2007 as a result of an extensive marketing
program by FLY YNG. In March, loads were at 95%. In addition, leisure-chartered flights have increased 125% in the last 6 months over the previous 6-month period.

Just a quick opinion…If someone from Spirit or another airline is reading this blog, you should not be posting to us that they are reading it. Some of these companies are very secretive and value their privacy and would probably rather not have it known that they may be interested in having flights out of this airport. By the way,I live in Florida and would love a direct flight from Clwr. to Ytown. One last thing, when I lived up there, I would frequently stop and eat lunch at a place called Cy’s located just north of the airport. Are they still open? They used to have a great salad bar.

Geo you do bring up a good point re: Spirit and their confidential or what have you, reading of this blog… The thing you must remember is this, we are a blog, we are in NO WAY affiliated with the Youngstown Airport. We have every right given to us to say who is and who is not reading this blog. If it hurts negotiations, tough, but it would be pretty silly if it did hurt negotiations. WE are the ones pushing for Spirit to come here.

You need to email Allegiant and tell them you want nonstop flights from Youngstown to Tampa/St. Pete [PIE].

The Airport Inn is just north of the airport entrance, it has pretty good food. In the airport terminal itself is Mikeees II. It’s a ’sports’ bar of sorts which hundreds of items to choose from. Both are very good in my opinion

Thanks for the response. I’m going to take a ride up to the airport and see how it looks when I come up this summer. I am almost 50 years old thus I remember the United direct flight to Tampa. That place was packed for the morning flight to Florida. When I got married over 20 years ago I flew from Ygn. to Chicago and then took a connecting flight to Hawaii. After I moved to Florida, I always took the commuter from Pittsburgh and that was always on time. Then US Air discontinued that service and I haven’t been back since I now fly from Tpa. to Pittsburgh and then drive in to Youngstown. Good luck with what you are trying to do.

Geo, I hope you stay and become one of our regulars on this blog by commenting to most of our posts.. You definitely seem to know what you are talking about when it comes to aviation and YNG.

I want to tell my readers that I added a 2nd stat system for the blog. This one doesn’t have the best features as the older stats we use; but it shows a map of where our readers come from. Now I can put a person to a place with the Google Map pins on there. If I see any IP Address up at the airport on rt. 193; it will not be a surprise here.

The Airport Inn (aka CY’s) has been closed for many months due to sewage issues.

Thanks for the info. Ygnair informed me about MikeeesII. I’ll take a drive up there when I get there in June and have lunch there. In fact I may try to go when the Allegiant flight is either taking off or arriving so that I can see the airport full. I’ll be writing a letter to Allegiant this week in hopes of them getting a Clwr flight added to Ygn.
