Boccieri Has an Interesting Idea

Senator John Boccieri is suggesting that Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport could be a maintenance hub for Continental Airlines.
The state of Ohio has offered Continental a financial package worth $16 million to expand its hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Senator Boccieri believes the growth of Continental, which expects to provide nonstop flights to Paris beginning in the summer of 2008, could provide economic growth for the region.
“It makes good business sense with the price of fuel to have a maintenance repair facility close to a major hub of operation. There is tremendous potential for expansion at the airport and we boast one of the largest runways in the state,” Senator Boccieri said.

maybe a good idea? but however not to sound bad about our airport and all but its more likely they would have maintenance at their houston texas hub…cleveland is not much more then expressjet much anymore they have seemed to scale back the mainline flights it seems cle-mia is now a ERJ flight and not a 737-500 anymore…but it would be wonderful if this did happen for YTOWN! go get them boccieri.
Randy… Did you even read the article? CLE and Ohio are trying to get COA to expand their CLE operations; and as you can see they are going to start CLE-Paris flights in the coming year.
If OHIO is all over COA to get more flights at CLE, then the least they could do is help this little airport in Vienna, Ohio. More flights at CLE means they will need more maintenance, and do you think it would make since to fly them all down to Houston, when they could keep them in NEOHIO.
sorry YNG I didn’t see the article but I understand what you mean now…but will they have air service to anywhere from YNG? or will it just be maintenance?
Nothing to be sorry about, but do read what I post because it will make more since when you go to comment.
Sad to think that this guy is a politician and he just may have had the best idea for this airport in quite some time.
Question: Why did Steve Bowser of Chuck Johnson not figure this one out? Answer: Because Bowser is over his head when it comes to marketing and thinking outside of the box and Chuck Johnson is just plain over his head as the Official Unofficial Voice of the Youngstown Warren Regional Airport.
I would hate to believe that these would be the guys representing the Airport to Continental Airlines IF they would even be interested.
I ask again, what have either of them really gotten accomplished in terms of real economic impact since either has been around. Allegiant is not a money maker (except for the grant money that the passengers bring in) and the school out there is a huge money loser for the airport.
The school is supposedly getting free rent, paid nothing for the renovations made, and is getting money from a non-profit entity that the WRPA created to own it. So, I have to ask again, have they done anything of benefit for the Airport?
And if this opportunity some how presents itself to them by falling out of the sky, they are too far over their heads to seize the opportunity.
TS,
Sounds like we need you at the helm to spearhead our efforts at YNG. I don’t know Mr. Bowser or Mr. Johnson well enough to speak about them personally. However, after reading the paper and hearing them on the radio in the last week to support the YNG SCASD, I’d say they’re making an honest effort. If they are successful in getting the grant, would you agree they have benefitted the airport?
If you possess the basket big enough to catch the falling opportunities out there for valley, PLEASE use it so we can all benefit. Are you part of the solution…or part of the problem?
I just wanted to add that i’ve read not too long ago in the cleveland plain dealer there was plans to level a few homes and the IX center near hopkins to add an additional runway but is that really needed? and I was very shocked to read that cleveland hopkins is continentals end largest hub after IAH..very shocking to me if you think about Newark since cleveland only currently has the cle-lgw flight not many longhauls like EWR and IAH does.
anyone know the aircraft type for the continental cle-paris flights? will it be a 777 or 767?
YNGROCK - I would have to say that I am part of the solution.
I am hard on Steve Bowser and Chuck Johnson because neither of them has the experience to support that they can do the marketing of the airport properly. And while at the helm for four years, they have a two day a week airline with one destination to show for Millions of Dollars of support from the counties, tax payers, and the federal government.
What I can say is that they would not listen to anyone else anyway. I am not the solution to the marketing problem, I already have a job.
I would suggest that the WRPA look at getting a manager with more of a business/marketing background then Bowser. I would also suggest that someone should ask why Bowser and Johnson were not ahead of a politician on asking Continental to come here.
I don’t have all the answers, nobody does. I have said many times that we have the wrong people at the helm. We needed a brain surgeon to fix our problems that were created fours plus years ago, and we hired a plumber. I said it last year in an article on this blog is you were around to read it. And, for the record, I am sticking to it.
TS,
So who hired these guys if they are without qualification or skill to run the airport? Was it the Port Authority Board? Is the cupboard that bare? Or is the board so misguided it made two bad personnel decisions?
I for one don’t care if Sen. Boccieri first came up with the idea for Continental. Good for him! Three cheers for you Senator! He is not only a Senator for Ohio, he flies C130 Hercules aircraft at the Air Force Base. I’d think he is well qualified to have input on aviation matters at the airport. To characterize him as a “politician” only, is a diservice to him and the service he does for our country.
I too don’t have all the answers for the airport, but I am eagerly awaiting good news with regard to new and better service. I’m not sure we need a “brain surgeon” to fix our problems. I’m all for someone with business skills to match up with the aviation guys to get the job done. If it’s Bowser and Johnson..awesome! If not it’s time to move on. When is their contract up?
I’m sorry I missed your article from last year. I am new here. By the way, you speak wiith certainty about them not listening to anyone else. Why do you say that? Is that from experiences at the board meetings?
Thanks for the dialogue TS. I too have a job. Here is hoping there are flights and airlines in the near future for all of us in the valley to take advantage of at YNG. I’m sticking to that!
Thanks YNGRock for joining our discussions here on the FlyYNG Blog. Boccieri’s idea is very much popular across the idea, and just goes to show that our guys in charge can’t look outside of the box.
We have better ideas here than they do at a board meeting!
