In this week’s chat, we discussed the Airport and it’s lack of getting participation from the local community to drum up support for the airport, as well as discussion of the SCASD, and even some misc. discussion of Allegiant and other nearby Airports. We had about 10 or so people come in and out to chat with us tonight, and have heard from Steve Bowser that he will take part in next week’s chat; so we will have a chat NEXT WEEK, not in 2 weeks.

[The Terminal Lounge]: Youngstown State Lineman has left at 8:57 pm
[ChaseOH] 8:57 pm: Hello
[KarlB737] 8:57 pm: I am not surprise that the airport management is not here. I believe they are the weakness in this operation.
[ChaseOH] 8:58 pm: First time here…. What goes on here this evening?
[Anthony [yngair]] 8:58 pm: BOWSER DID Email me today
[KarlB737] 8:59 pm: Personally I see the management at TOL and YNG operating in the same fashion.
[ChaseOH] 8:59 pm: Just back from dropping off a friend at PIT.
[KarlB737] 8:59 pm: While I see the management at FNT and RFD operation in the same agressive fashion.
[ChaseOH] 9:00 pm: There was not much happening there.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:00 pm: Bowser is out of town, perhaps with an airline… and will be with us NEXT WEEK
[The Terminal Lounge]: davidleeroth has entered at 9:00 pm
[KarlB737] 9:01 pm: I am in Michigan but I noted that the people of Youngstown spoke. Where is the YNG administration at ANY TIME not just tonight.
[davidleeroth] 9:01 pm: nothing going on here i see
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:01 pm: well we have a few ppl coming late
[ChaseOH] 9:01 pm: I was surprised at how slow things were in PIT tonight.
[davidleeroth] 9:01 pm: we have to wait? LOL good bye
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:02 pm: david- you play for YSU
[KarlB737] 9:02 pm: No one has to wait for anything.
[KarlB737] 9:02 pm: Speak your peace.
[The Terminal Lounge]: George in Ytown has entered at 9:02 pm
[KarlB737] 9:02 pm: Hi George………………….
[George in Ytown] 9:03 pm: hey gusy
[davidleeroth] 9:03 pm: which city did allegiant announce for ft. lauderdale?
[George in Ytown] 9:03 pm: NOT YNG.
[KarlB737] 9:03 pm: This is your forum regarding the Youngstown-Warren Airport. Say what you would like.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:03 pm: george is correct, not ytown, i posted it on my blog today
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:04 pm: or 2 days back… this is hwy i started these chats. we need to get the community involed with the airport!
[ChaseOH] 9:04 pm: How do you plan to do that?
[KarlB737] 9:04 pm: ChaseOH how would you evaluate the current situation at YNG?
[George in Ytown] 9:04 pm: thanks karl… well i have read the blog for a long time now, but i never wanted to comment on it just because i didnt want to. but decided i should today
[ChaseOH] 9:04 pm: I think it is pretty poor for a community this size.
[KarlB737] 9:05 pm: Could it be said that it is essentially idle.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:05 pm: please comment more george… well my plan was for bowser and johnson to be on here today and chat on how we can start a campaign on the web and in print to get support for SPIRIT AIR or ALLEGIANT AIR to add flights
[ChaseOH] 9:05 pm: We need an aggressive approach to get someone here.
[George in Ytown] 9:05 pm: well said Tom.
[davidleeroth] 9:05 pm: greensboro, nc was the first city allegiant announced for service to ft. lauderdale
[George in Ytown] 9:06 pm: that is your name from what i have seen on the blog is it not
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:06 pm: no david. Rockford, IL was first, followed by Chattanooga, and Allentown, —–greensboro is 4th
[KarlB737] 9:06 pm: Chase has it right — Where there is aggressive planning, community involvement, and just plain hard work you can achieve results. This is precise what FNT and RFD are doing.
[davidleeroth] 9:07 pm: will yng be on the list or is it being left out?
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:07 pm: YNG Is going to be left out…. for NOW at least. we were the 12th city on the bubble
[davidleeroth] 9:07 pm: bummer — thanks for the info
[ChaseOH] 9:07 pm: 12th city on the bubble meaning?
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:08 pm: good news is though we are again the bubble city- meaning we were porbably the city they decided to leave out FIRST
[KarlB737] 9:08 pm: GSO will be announced soon for FLL.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:08 pm: Dave. do you fly?
[KarlB737] 9:08 pm: I read a possible reference tonight regarding Huntington, West Virginia as well.
[George in Ytown] 9:08 pm: it is a shamne,. Allegiant is a nice airline
[davidleeroth] 9:08 pm: sure — usually out of akron canton most convenient
[George in Ytown] 9:09 pm: i flew it to orlando this past year.. great flight, great prices
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:09 pm: seems like everyone says that dave
[davidleeroth] 9:10 pm: i flew to orlando and the reason i chose Akron is the YNG schedule didn’t fit my trip
[ChaseOH] 9:10 pm: You would think if a small community like Huntington can fill seats to FLL, certainly a YNG can do the same and better.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:10 pm: understanding dave, 2 flights a week is pasthetic. but it seems like bowser and co. feel its the best we can get.
[KarlB737] 9:10 pm: I agree Chase but I still think you have a weak element there.
[KarlB737] 9:10 pm: If you rule out the community what does that leave?
[ChaseOH] 9:10 pm: although I am going to FLL in October thru CAK for $113.00 round trip so not sure YNG could beat that.
[davidleeroth] 9:11 pm: i’m even confused which days they fly out and fly back but i don’t study their schedule to that’s why
[KarlB737] 9:11 pm: If they matched it just for your convience would you take it?
[ChaseOH] 9:11 pm: I would pay more for the convience.
[davidleeroth] 9:11 pm: sure — why would i want to drive an hour to catch a plane?
[KarlB737] 9:12 pm: I thought so. I think most people will take what is close by if its available.
[George in Ytown] 9:12 pm: monday and friday are the flights
[davidleeroth] 9:13 pm: i’m going to orlando again in january — so allegiant will get another chance but i have to do some research on the sanford airport location —-i believe it’s north of the city
[The Terminal Lounge]: flyinryan has entered at 9:13 pm
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:13 pm: 113 is a bargain… i’d expect it would start around 59 one way from YNGFLL if offered
[KarlB737] 9:13 pm: I don’t think YNG has to OUTBID anybody. Just match the prices of the other airline or other airport.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:13 pm: welcome Ryan from Toledo to our chat!
[ChaseOH] 9:13 pm: drive to PIT for me was $4.50 in tolls, higher parking and $10.00+ in gas to/from PIT. Not to mention the added hrs of driving there and getting to the gate.
[flyinryan] 9:13 pm: Thank ya…good to be here :) [KarlB737] 9:13 pm: Hi Ryan didn’t know you would be here.
[flyinryan] 9:14 pm: I didn’t either karl….how goes it?
[KarlB737] 9:15 pm: I think flyers will come to YNG just for the convience just as you are indicating. Thats the key that the YNG needs to work on a make a slogan for.
[The Terminal Lounge]: davidleeroth has left at 9:15 pm
[KarlB737] 9:15 pm: That door slammed right on my foot.
[KarlB737] 9:16 pm: Chase what part of Ohio are you from?
[ChaseOH] 9:16 pm: Warren
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:16 pm: I dont want to get off this subject, but i did want to address the SMALL COMMUINTIES AIR SERVICE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
[KarlB737] 9:16 pm: George I take it you are living right in Youngstown…………
[ChaseOH] 9:16 pm: I am 5 miles from the YNG terminal.
[KarlB737] 9:16 pm: Have you heard anything on that I have not.
[George in Ytown] 9:17 pm: correct… anthony when do we hear that news?
[flyinryan] 9:17 pm: They will probably be announced at any minute
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:17 pm: all i heard today was as followed”: The DOT has advised that awards under the 2007 Small Community Air Service Development Program can be expected “by September,” and at about the same time as last year. From that information, we can figure around August 15th for an announcement.
[ChaseOH] 9:17 pm: does this chatroom meet certain days and times?
[flyinryan] 9:17 pm: straight from Boyd himself
[George in Ytown] 9:17 pm: thansk anthony… what do you mean any minutes ryan?
[flyinryan] 9:17 pm: I was referring to the quote by Anthony
[KarlB737] 9:18 pm: I can monitor requests for SCASD and letters in return thanking them for their request but the results I don’t see to often except in news sources.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:18 pm: Right now we are going to do this monday nights at 9pm..steve bowser emailed me today and siad he will join us next week
[George in Ytown] 9:18 pm: but do you mean any day now Ryan?
[flyinryan] 9:18 pm: Well…yaeh
[flyinryan] 9:18 pm: yeah*
[ChaseOH] 9:18 pm: OK, I have to leave and will try my best to check back in next Monday. Thanks.
[Anthony [yngair]] 9:19 pm: thansks
[The Terminal Lounge]: ChaseOH has left at 9:19 pm
[KarlB737] 9:19 pm: Ouch!
[George in Ytown] 9:19 pm: i need to make a call. i will be back in 10 minutes or so.
[KarlB737] 9:20 pm: Now that YNG has nothing. They should resubmit their SCASD proposals.
[flyinryan] 9:21 pm: Anthony…have you heard anything about a possible upgrade in service to SFB this winter season?
[KarlB737] 9:22 pm: I would still like to know from anybody where they are going to get the aircraft soon enough to handle all these new routes.
[flyinryan] 9:23 pm: well…I think they are going to have a total of 4 new ones by the time the new focus cities open
[KarlB737] 9:23 pm: At first I thought where flights were discontinued like YNG that would free up some aircraft however I don’t see how that can be enough.
[flyinryan] 9:24 pm: they are putting the 3 -87s out in AZA
[flyinryan] 9:25 pm: I wonder if they are going to cut some frequency to the other 3 focus cities
[KarlB737] 9:26 pm: I guess what I’m saying is the number of new routes before these two hubs were announced coupled with these new announced routes can’t possibly be covered by 3 or 4 additional aircraft. What do you all think?
[KarlB737] 9:27 pm: George went to call Allegiant to get our questions answered — thats why he left and is still on the phone.
[KarlB737] 9:28 pm: There is also a rumor that George while making this call is prepared to offer Allegiant a few million for serious YNG cooperation.
[flyinryan] 9:29 pm: I guess you could say you can add 6 cities per aircraft
[KarlB737] 9:29 pm: George is trying to get some Delta MD-88s at night to pull this off. Tonight while making this call he is sweating while on the phone.
[flyinryan] 9:29 pm: city AAA 3x weekly BBB 2x weekly CCC 2x weekly all of that times 2
[The Terminal Lounge]: tom has entered at 9:30 pm
[KarlB737] 9:30 pm: Good evening Tom where do you hail from?
[KarlB737] 9:31 pm: It gotten so quiet in here that I think people are trying to listen in on George’s call.
[flyinryan] 9:32 pm: LOL…what’s george calling about?
[KarlB737] 9:32 pm: I think I have clearly stated the answer to that above.
[KarlB737] 9:33 pm: Ryan whats the matter with the rest of the TOL site members. Its pretty much you and I posting everything.
[tom] 9:34 pm: Hello, I’m from Canfield at this time. Grew up in Youngstown but have been away for a quite a few years.
[KarlB737] 9:34 pm: Is the site dead, the airport dead or are the rest of the members too disallusioned.
[The Terminal Lounge]: anthony has entered at 9:34 pm
[anthony] 9:35 pm: hey
[KarlB737] 9:35 pm: Where is Canfield in relation to Youngstown. I know this is a stupid question but I live in Michigan.
[anthony] 9:35 pm: sorry internet was dead for 10 miutes
[anthony] 9:35 pm: canfield is 10 minutes ouitside of ytown, altho partss of it touch ytown
[tom] 9:35 pm: Sothwest borderof Youngstown
[flyinryan] 9:35 pm: I’m not sure Karl. I just think there has just been a lack of good news out there and everyone is losing interest
[anthony] 9:36 pm: who is tom, since i am just returning
[KarlB737] 9:36 pm: Tom what do you think is needed to pump up air service at YNG?
[flyinryan] 9:36 pm: I actually got an email fom an email from one who used to post a lot…he got a new job so that’s what he’s been working on…and plans on posting again soon.
[tom] 9:37 pm: You don’t want to know I believe you’ll think I am too pessimistic. After coming back to youngstown after many years I was shocked
[anthony] 9:37 pm: where were u tom?
[KarlB737] 9:37 pm: I think no matter what we are interested in your thoughts. Fire away. thats what we are here for.
[flyinryan] 9:38 pm: NBC News tomorrow night is going to have a special on airline delays
[tom] 9:38 pm: Virginia for 8 years and cleveland for about 15 more. Although I did come to visted my parents, I stayed out of Youngstown
[anthony] 9:38 pm: Tom from guinzone?
[tom] 9:39 pm: You lost me
[anthony] 9:39 pm: do you post on my blog
[KarlB737] 9:39 pm: The ATC system is still not what it needs to be for one thing. More airlines with more flights and all those CRJs. One chuckhole like weather or staffing and its the ballgame as we have seen this past year.
[tom] 9:39 pm: NO I wasn’t aware of it
[anthony] 9:40 pm: how did you come about of coming in this chat?
[The Terminal Lounge]: Uma has entered at 9:40 pm
[anthony] 9:40 pm: welcome UMA
[KarlB737] 9:40 pm: Uma welcome aboard………….
[KarlB737] 9:40 pm: Uma where do you live?
[tom] 9:41 pm: I was looking at the Vindy forum and saw the link. I felt that your discussion might be more worthwhile than many of the posts there
[Uma] 9:41 pm: Thanks everyone, I’ve lived just about everywhere, and now live in Ytown’s North Heights neighborhood.
[Uma] 9:41 pm: I saw the post on teh Vindy board, too.
[anthony] 9:41 pm: vindy.com boards suck… post on downtownyoungstown.com and you will fine the difference of pessimism to optimism
[KarlB737] 9:41 pm: Uma what are your thoughts on the air service situation at YNG?
[tom] 9:41 pm: I will try that
[anthony] 9:42 pm: did we discuss the SCASD anymore after i had left?
[KarlB737] 9:42 pm: They may suck but if it steers people this way — OK
[Uma] 9:42 pm: Maybe I’m not too informed, but I wish more private companies operated out of the airport.
[Uma] 9:43 pm: I took flying lessons from a private company at the Great Falls International airport (TINY!!!!) when I lived there. It was wonderful.
[anthony] 9:43 pm: YNG does offer flying lessons from a few businesses out there, i have a list on the blog backers page of the yngair.com site
[KarlB737] 9:43 pm: Any of you discovered where or if Fedex Ground set themselves up in your area. There was a story on that earlier this year. Anthony and I talked alot about it back then but we haven’t heard what may have happened.
[Uma] 9:43 pm: Great. I’ll check it out. (And thanks!)
[flyinryan] 9:44 pm: not really anthony
[KarlB737] 9:45 pm: I understand Fedex is looking for the same thing in the Toledo area as well.
[anthony] 9:45 pm: i had posted the august15th thing from boyd.. but we shall see
[tom] 9:45 pm: I would have to say that while I was in Cleveland, everyone was a supporter of the airport. Even if you never flew, the airport is a big asset in Cleveland as far as jobs and the economy go. Is there much community support for the Youngstown airport?
[Uma] 9:45 pm: There’s not much community support for ANYTHING in Ytown.
[flyinryan] 9:45 pm: They are looking to possibly relocate to an area where they can expand and be allowed to have the triple trailers easy access to the Turnpike
[anthony] 9:45 pm: tom that is our goial.. we want to make our community coalition called the FlyYoungstown Coalition.
[KarlB737] 9:46 pm: But an attempt to measure it was just concluded .
[KarlB737] 9:46 pm: I think the results were greater than we expected.
[KarlB737] 9:46 pm: In terms of the number of people from your area that made their air service choices.
[anthony] 9:46 pm: we recently ran a RALLY FOR YNG Campaign to get support for allegiant to add flights. had ovder 2200 votes!
[KarlB737] 9:47 pm: That effort which by the way is reusable does seem to reach the community as was proven.
[tom] 9:47 pm: Would they be able to maintain additional flights and still make a profit?
[KarlB737] 9:48 pm: If there is a mutiny at the YNG airport.
[anthony] 9:48 pm: they have 93% loads for most of this year, but yields are lower. but if they offfered flights to cities like Vegas or Ft. Lauderdale, they would definitely make a margin, according to our poll
[Uma] 9:48 pm: I’d love to see flights to Vegas.
[anthony] 9:48 pm: i think everyone would, but allegiants jets would not make the route a moneymaker unfortunately
[KarlB737] 9:49 pm: Now that we have so many of you here from the immediate Youngstown area which destination do you believe would be the most popular of any city you know of.
[flyinryan] 9:49 pm: Ft. Lauderdale would probably have the highest yield of all of them as AirTran still isn’t showing much interest in Akron-Ft. Lauderdale
[anthony] 9:49 pm: yah i heard FLL-CAK is not going to be continued, it’s an average route and doesnt make the $$$ that you see on CAK-BOS or CAK-ATL
[Uma] 9:50 pm: I imagine Chicago would logically be lower-cost for the interest, and pretty high interest for the area. I’d like to see more West Coast and Southern options, myself.
[KarlB737] 9:50 pm: So are we seeing a weakness at CAK that could be achieve at YNG with the right plan of action.
[anthony] 9:50 pm: Vegas, Atlanta, Ft. Myers, Ft. Lauderdale, and DC are the top 5 cities for YNG
[The Terminal Lounge]: yoyo has entered at 9:50 pm
[KarlB737] 9:51 pm: Welcome YOYO
[flyinryan] 9:51 pm: I would say DC would be the best choice right now
[yoyo] 9:51 pm: hey whats the news?
[KarlB737] 9:51 pm: Hey yo where do you live?
[yoyo] 9:51 pm: lordstown
[anthony] 9:51 pm: next chat, can we please use REAL NAMES lol thanks!
[KarlB737] 9:52 pm: I think they made my 1971 Camaro there which I got rid of years ago.
[anthony] 9:52 pm: correct… lordstown is home of a GM Plant
[anthony] 9:53 pm: be right back
[KarlB737] 9:53 pm: George has been on the phone so long that he is now offering to pay cash to Allegiant for MD-80s from anywhere in the world for YNG air service. With his absence you can sense his desperation.
[The Terminal Lounge]: yoyo has left at 9:54 pm
[KarlB737] 9:54 pm: YoYo gone already.
[The Terminal Lounge]: anthony has left at 9:54 pm
[flyinryan] 9:55 pm: Ya know Karl…I was telling David today we shoulda ponied up the $2M for the Chicago Express 121 certificate 2 years ago
[flyinryan] 9:55 pm: started running routes out of here and bought some E170s and partnered up with AirTran….
[KarlB737] 9:55 pm: I still believe as you do that they had a good operaton.
[KarlB737] 9:56 pm: There flights out of FNT seemed to always be packed from what I saw.
[KarlB737] 9:56 pm: Was it that way at TOL?
[The Terminal Lounge]: tom has left at 9:56 pm
[flyinryan] 9:57 pm: We weren’t always as full as FNT, but we did fill flights at or slightly above the systemwide
[flyinryan] 9:57 pm: we had better yields though
[KarlB737] 9:57 pm: Prices higher than FNT?
[The Terminal Lounge]: Uma has left at 9:58 pm
[flyinryan] 9:58 pm: yeah…we sold more of the higher priced fares
[KarlB737] 9:59 pm: Even with the American Eagle flights to ORD……….
[flyinryan] 9:59 pm: Yeah
[KarlB737] 10:00 pm: All I can say is Chicago Express must have been doing something right.
[flyinryan] 10:00 pm: ATA had a great product out of here and a loyal following
[KarlB737] 10:00 pm: I can’t remember a weak market in their entire route structure can you?
[flyinryan] 10:01 pm: I think their weakest market was SPI
[flyinryan] 10:01 pm: but that was subsidized
[flyinryan] 10:01 pm: FWA wasn’t the best performer either
[KarlB737] 10:01 pm: The capital of the state — that is odd isn’t it.
[flyinryan] 10:01 pm: but again they were subsidized
[KarlB737] 10:02 pm: FWA was subsidized as well as SPI….?
[flyinryan] 10:03 pm: Yeah…FWA offered up money for them and C8 closed CID for FWA’s $$$ …. that’s why you see FWA have 3x DFW and 5x ORD on AA
[flyinryan] 10:03 pm: all TRIP $$$
[KarlB737] 10:03 pm: Has David heard anything from the new guy at the airport?
[KarlB737] 10:04 pm: Or do they have any communication?
[flyinryan] 10:04 pm: the communication has really been lacking since Brian left…I email Kris back and forth often
[KarlB737] 10:05 pm: Any responces?
[KarlB737] 10:05 pm: You don’t have to tell me the content I was just wondering if there are communication lines.
[flyinryan] 10:06 pm: yeah….nothing promising…it seems to me as he isn’t going to be doing air service development as he is going to be more of airport promoting
[KarlB737] 10:07 pm: Promoting through the media or local business or…………………
[flyinryan] 10:07 pm: and the Sixel Consulting Group will do more in negotiating air service enhancements
[flyinryan] 10:07 pm: both…the buy local fly local campaign
[flyinryan] 10:07 pm: is practically all him
[The Terminal Lounge]: yng has entered at 10:07 pm
[KarlB737] 10:07 pm: Sounds like there is a weakness within to farm these responsibilities out.

[yng] 10:08 pm: thx
[yng] 10:08 pm: thx
[KarlB737] 10:08 pm: We’ve gotten a little off track and it is getting quiet.

I am not the most positive person when it comes to expressing myself about the YNG administration. It is because I have seen better in some other markets that are near big cities. Having said that, a positive nitch did surface in the discussion last night. I for one am glad it happened. It had never crossed my mind before.

    It came from this exchange:

“[KarlB737] 9:11 pm: If they matched it just for your convience would you take it?
[ChaseOH] 9:11 pm: I would pay more for the convience.”

Ladies and Gentlemen I submit to you and to Steve Bowser the angle that YNG should absolutely pursue in a serious quest to advance the air service. A plan using this as a goal and a related slogan to match it. Even though I don’t live in the Youngstown area I believe that a flyer would fly out of YNG if the price even matched what it would cost at CLE, PIT, or CAK. If just one new route did this as a start I believe it would prove the point.

For example if those other airports charge you $225.00 for a particular round trip flight and YNG matched it with their “convience flights” (Theres a slogan all ready) I think most flyers in your area would take it. The savings in time and car related expenses alone would make it worthwhile.

    Comments yea or nay……………
