News of the SCASD Really Can Get YNG back on track

As a nearby airport suffers in PIT from the very sad news that USAIR will be cutting their daily flights to below 70 a day, when just 7 years ago it was more than 500 a day, the Youngstown Airport is looking to get back on track after years without daily service to any hub in America. This past Friday, the DOT announced that the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport will be receiving $575,000 from the SCASD Grant Program to help fund and aid the first 3 years of operations for a business carrier to fly 3-5 daily flights, on 50-100 seat regional jets, to a hub such as Chicago O’Hare, Cincinnati, Charlotte, DC, or even Atlanta.
Since I began this blog, this is something I have pushed for. Daily Flights is what will bring the YNG Airport back, not flights to Orlando or Atlantic City 1-2 times per week. The math simply adds up folks! Let’s say we get 3 flights a day on a 70 seat jet, and in year 1 we get 70% loads. 3 x 70(.7)= 147 passengers per day x 365 days per year= 53,655 passengers per year! You add that with the 20-25k from the Allegiant Air flights, the Airport could see upwards of 75,000 passengers per year as soon as the year 2009.
What can we do to help… That is something Steve Bowser and myself discussed a few weeks ago and will need to discuss now. We are hoping to get the imput from the Mahoning Valley to get the best product for YNG!

EXCELLENT NEWS!!! Very sad for PIT though. I was at PIT in July and was shocked at how empty it was. I think this presents a great opprotunity for another airline to come in and steal the spot light from US AIrways. I still wonder though how they can just decide that they want to go from 500 daily flights to just 70. They have invested a lot in PIT and have always had a large presence even before they became US Air. Its sad to see when a hub airport which strongly relies on its status as a hub to continue offering a variety of flights loses that status.
Port Authority Debates Hiring Marketing Staffer
The airport now charges a $4.50 per ticket fee.

VIENNA — After being awarded $575,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation to attract an airline that would provide daily service to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, it is more important than ever to improve the airport’s marketing capabilities, Western Reserve Port Authority member John Masternick said.
But the question of how to do that is far from clear.
At last month’s meeting of the port authority, which oversees the airport, members asked Steve Bowser, the airport’s director of aviation, to provide them with a job description for a full-time marketing employee.
That was prompted by concerns about whether the airport had done enough to stay in contact with companies such as RTI International Metals of Niles, which recently announced it might move its senior executives out of Niles to be closer to a major airport.
However, neither of the two port authority members pushing for hiring a marketing employee — Thomas Petrarca and Don Hanni Jr. — attended the port authority’s meeting Wednesday. Hanni recently suffered a stroke.
The five board members attending Wednesday had different ideas.
Port Authority member Clarence R. Smith, who did not attend last month’s meeting, said “it makes no sense” to pay a marketing employee $100,000 per year to do a job that could be handled better by a consulting company.
