Ohio Congressman Ryan On Regional Airport’s Future

November 20, 2007

Ohio Congressman Ryan On Regional Airport's Future

Local leaders are trying to lay out a plan for the future of the “Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.

Following a closed-door, brainstorming meeting held today in Vienna.

Local leaders tell say no decisions were made about the airport, but now the focus is finding a mission and working together with leaders from both Mahoning and Trumbull Counties.

Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan, of the 17th Congressional District says, ”Where the state money, the local money goes, the county commissioners have been committed to this-how to focus to get one area of the airport jump started.”

The same group will likely meet again in the next few months to further discuss the issue.

Convenience Will Not Be Overlooked At YNG

The concept of convenience for the population of the Youngstown-Warren area will be a prominent factor when additional flights begin to start arriving at YNG.  This is a topic that yngair touched on a while back.  He and I discussed it at great length back then.  Generally when you consider whether this will have an effect or not the trend of thought aims for not having an impact on passenger attraction.  Connected with that thought is the feeling that three other major airports in the area (CLE, PIT, & CAK) will be a permanent magnet for all passengers because of the abundance of flights that they offer.  Even I have thought this to be true to a great extent and then I have to reflect back as I have watched passengers in droves flock to FNT instead of DTW.  I am now beginning to see passengers who have been speaking out openly in favor of RFD instead of ORD or MSN.  It is these comments that I bring to you today to prove the point which even I find hard to believe.  No matter what you believe or what I or yngair says these are statements from RFD passengers on this very point:

“It’s about time,” she said after the route, which locals have sought for years. “I hope I can come back to this airport. I’m sick of O’Hare.”

“We’re going to be able to visit them more often,” she said. Rockford “is just as close as O’Hare. No traffic, free parking. They just greeted us and brought our baggage in.”

Paul Bloom drove from Madison for the flight, which is an easier trip than flying from Madison..“This is just going to be a little more convenient for me,”

Hector Sotelo was in town to visit his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Chris Bartlett. He was glad to fly from a small airport 15 minutes from his house to a small airport near his family’s house.

“The passengers were all saying it takes forever to get your bags at O’Hare,” he said. “It’s a little more convenient, a lot easier.”

Bonnie Strom drove from Wonder Lake just to get information about future flights. She also said it would be more convenient than flying from O’Hare.

The passengers have spoken.  The local passengers spoke pretty clear during the recent “Rally for YNG” vote.  Convenience will indeed be a positive factor.

YNG Can Learn From Dayton’s Marketing Agenda

Now that YNG has been approved for some SCASD assistance it can move forward with talks with a potential airliner.  But what about two areas of marketing?  YNG will have to market itself first to any airlines under consideration and secondly to the passengers in the Youngstown-Warren area.

It is my hope that when a Marketing Director is hired that individual will insist on a professional top notch marketing package to distribute to the airline of choice.  It will have to be a good one to get the attention of an airline these days.  Its message will have to be concise and crystal clear as to why they should serve the YNG airport.

A weakness now exists at PIT in that they are raising fees to carriers using the airport.  Some will pay it and some will rethink whether to remain or not.  It is that sliver of airlines that I believe need to be approached by YNG including USAirways.  Even if USAirways Express turboprop service could be obtained to DCA for example it could be a win-win for both the commuter airline and the population in the immediate area.  The turbo-prop service would be a fuel saver plus a departure from YNG instead of PIT could be a fee saver of benefit for USAirways Express.  The added flight at YNG could start turning passenger heads towards YNG instead of PIT.  It could be on a trial run basis for both sides to look at to monitor the results and might eliminate the need for upfront SCASD funds.  No ramp fees during the experimental period could be in the agreement which might seal the deal.  The SCASD funds could be saved for some other legacy airline consideration.  After some additional airline service is obtained YNG will have to market itself to the immediate area.  YNG can learn from techniques at Dayton:

Why YNG Needs Cargo Op’s!

WEATHERSFIELD — RTI International Metals has signed a 10-year deal to supply titanium components for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The deal, which was announced today, will produce a total of $900 million in revenue for the Weathersfield-based company, starting next year. The contract extends RTI’s role with the Dreamliner. Last year, RTI signed a five-year deal to provide structural floor parts for the plane. That contract called for RTI to be a subcontractor with Fuji Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Here is yet another huge contract for RTI Titanium of Niles, the same RTI that is moving its Corp. HQ from Niles to Pittsburgh because there is a lack of Air Service here to major cities. A few years back RTI got a contract to supply titanium parts for the A-380, and now today we hear the news that RTI will make titanium parts for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner…. o ya wasn’t it like in 2001 that we actually tried to get that Boeing plant here??? and it still isn’t flying yet.. hmmm…

In other news:

-Allegiant is back flying twice a week to Orlando-Sanford from Youngstown. This time around flights are in the evening hours, with fliers getting to Orlando around 8:30pm at night.

-We haven’t heard from Steve Bowser in about 6 weeks. We hope this means the airport is in active talks with an airline and he has no time to talk; although we all know that is the furthest thing from the truth!

-We want to have a YNGAir Chat soon.. Post a comment with the best day of the week and time in the evening it would be best for you. We can try to make it accessible for everyone!

-Finally with my beloved Indians ending and the YSU Football season coming to a close, I will begin to post more on the blog. Like last year, this time of the year is hectic with me and maintaining my other sites. I encourage you to Check Out and Join my Youngstown State Fan Site: GuinZone.com Today!
